Small Typo Creates Big Problems for eBay

On the eBay August 2008 Checklist, there is information which would lead people to believe that the 35 cent insertion fee for fixed price is only a promotional rate good until the end of the year.

.

What the page currently says is

Starting on September 16th and through the end of the year:

Starting on October 1st:

Offer Free Shipping and get free Subtitle. PowerSellers: double your Final Value Fee discounts!

Note that if you are like me and have read EVERYTHING and listened to every webinar and every Town Hall meeting, you would know right away that eBay made a typo.  The part that says “good through the end of the year” doesn’t belong on the line “Starting Sept 16th” but rather it belongs on the line “Starting October 1st”.  That is because the free subtitle and double final value fee discounts are being given to sellers who offer free shipping but those bonuses are only good October 1st through the end of the year.

Of course, the folks writing the content for the website don’t know the details of the changes (probably because there are so many changes it is difficult to keep up) so naturally they are bound to make errors.  But what seems like such a minor error actually has large implications.  Because eBay has a history of being purposely vague, it is no wonder that the discussion boards are on fire with conspiracy theories.   However, the 35 cent insertion fees are not temporary and will not expire at the end of 2008.  Now that I’ve reported the problem with the eBay site and the Rep agrees with me that the wording is misleading and confusing, it will be interesting to see how long it takes before the website is corrected.

UPDATE: The website is actually NOT in error.  There is no typo.  For the corrected information, please see blog post titled The New eBay Fixed Price Fees are Only Temporary

I want eBay to reduce FP30 to $0.10 starting Jan 2009. 🙂

[…] I wrote about what I thought was a typo on the eBay website (see Small Typo Creates Big Problems for eBay) but after I published the post I received a voicemail message from an eBay Top Seller Account rep […]

Just like feebay – the ol bait and switch. It’s typical. Another good reason for you to leave feebay also. I sell on http://www.alsoshop.com and several others. There are alternatives out there people!
