Intelligent Mail is the Big Topic this Year on National PCC Day

Today was the National PCC Day.  The Postal Customer CouncilTM (PCC®) was established in 1961 to improve communications between U.S. Postal Service® customers and managers.

At today’s event, the United States Postmaster spoke about the challenges facing the U.S. Post Office.  In addition, the really big topic this year is Intelligent Mail and I learned more than I ever thought possible about the subject.  I even earned my certification in Intelligent Mail today.

Information about Intelligent Mail can be found on the postal website at http://www.usps.com/intelligentmail/

Already, most eBay sellers use a form of intelligent mail – USPS delivery confirmation, which is the first intelligent mail service offered by the US Postal Service.  Beginning May 2009, mailers will start using intelligent mail on envelopes sent during regular mailing.  Intelligent mail will become mandatory in May 2011 when it will replace the Postnet barcode system.  Intelligent mail will be available in a basic service option as well as a full service option.

The intelligent mail barcode is just slightly longer than the Postnet barcode but that minor difference is going to cause some major changes.  Envelope makers will have to have to go through expensive re-tooling so that a larger size window in the window-envelopes will be created, to accommodate the longer barcode, and many companies who ship millions of pieces of bulk mail a year may have to purchase new inkjet printers to support the new format.

One of the biggest benefits of intelligent mail, especially for companies who send a return envelope for customers’ payments, is that it will be known with certainty that a piece of mail is in the mail stream.  Intelligent mail brings a whole new meaning to the term “the check is in the mail” because companies will soon know whether that is actually true or not.  Unfortunately, with eBay’s new Paperless Payments policy, there will be no more checks in the mail to eBay sellers after October 2008.
