eBay SYI Form Now Includes Electronic Payment Methods ONLY

 eBay Accepted Payments Policy
(copied from the eBay website – click
HERE for complete information):

eBay wants to help ensure that the marketplace offers buyers safer online payment choices. As described in our safe buying guide, eBay encourages sellers to offer payments through PayPal. PayPal is convenient to use and has privacy built in.

Some offline payment methods, such as personal checks, may not offer the same level of protection or convenience as online payments.

Effective March 2008, sellers may be required to offer PayPal or a merchant credit card as one of the payment methods for a specific listing.

Permitted on eBay.com:

Sellers may offer to accept:

  • PayPal, merchant credit cards (including MasterCard, Visa, Amex, Discover® Network), debit cards, and bank electronic payments for eBay purchases.

  • Bank-to-bank transfers, often known as bank wire transfers or bank cash transfers.

  • Cash on Delivery (COD) or cash for in-person transactions.

  • Personal checks, money orders, cashier’s checks, certified checks, and other negotiable instruments.

Note that, as of today, the eBay website has NOT been changed (although I expect it will be changed soon).  Today, the website still shows that payment by mail (checks, money orders, cashier’s check, etc) are accepted.  However, the eBay SYI (Sell Your Item) form now excludes the check/ money order option:

Brews, any idea if ProPay is fully integrated as of today? I poked around the eBay discussion boards some, but didn’t see anything. Sounds like it may be a PITA to integrate if you sign-up early, but sounds like a breeze if you do it after official integration. Only reason I’m so curious.

I signed up for ProPay already too, but I’m sure we’ll hear from sellers once the ProPay option is offered during checkout. I am anxious about the ProPay integration as well. It will save me a lot of time and make payment easier for buyers. Paypal will still be the preferred payment of choice, but those that want an alternative will have it. I know the auction crowd wants checks & MO, but the commodity sellers have very little need for them I think.

Cliff, I am told by ProPay that integration with eBay should occur in a matter of days and that Propay is just waiting for things to occur on the eBay side. I was also told that anyone who signs up now will be able to easily integrate in a few days but that there really is no advantage to signing up now before the integration since buyers would be unable to use ProPay to pay you for an eBay purchase until the integration is complete.

Thanks for checking that out for me, I guess I’ll cool my engines a little bit and wait til next week.

I’m having a BIG problem with this electronic payment restriction. Since I have stopped accepting checks and MO, I have been getting repeated complaints from buyers that they are UNABLE to pay using their credit cards. The only common thing I can find is that these buyers don’t have a Paypal account. I thought the whole idea was you didn’t need a Paypal account in order to use your credit card for payment. These frustrated buyers (who are having an “excellent buying experience”) end up sending a check or MO anyway since Paypal refuses to take their CC.

Yes, I am the seller Ina wrote about in today’s Auction Bytes blog article.

Anyone else having this issue, and if not, why me? What’s set wrong?
