UPDATED: The new eBay Stores Experience Search is Partially Broken

UPDATED:  The problem is most likely related to some cross-promotions we have done in our Premier (mid-level) stores.  It does not appear to be occurring system wide, only with accounts that used certain eBay tools for customized cross-promotions.

On January 16, 2009, eBay sent a message to sellers letting them know about a major change to the eBay stores.  Part of the message stated:

“We are pleased to announce the new eBay Stores experience, featuring templates to update the look of your Store and enhanced search results to improve your buyers’ shopping experience.

  • New Store templates: Sharp, professional designs and merchandising features will help you attract and retain more buyers.
  • Enhanced search results: Searches within your Store will include titles, categories, item specifics, and even similar keywords for more relevant results.
  • Consistent experience: Buyers will enjoy a more consistent, streamlined buying experience throughout eBay.

Any time between now and the end of March 2009, you can preview how your Store will look in the new eBay Stores Experience. After March, all Stores will be automatically upgraded.”

The email also included a link to the Frequently Asked Questions

The new eBay stores look is appealing, in my opinion.  However, I would advise anyone considering opting in early to reconsider because the eBay store search function is partially broken.

Once in an eBay seller’s store who has opted in to the new “experience”, the search function works ONLY if the buyer does NOT check the box to search both titles and descriptions.

A simple search without checking that box works just fine.  However, input any term in the search box and click on the box to search “in titles and descriptions” and an error message appears.

No word from eBay as to when this technical glitch will be resolved.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone else who also opted in to the new eBay experience to let me know what you think about the change.

I was testing some new opted-in Stores and their searches this morning, and did NOT find that to be true in the Stores I was testing. Maybe that’s not for everybody?

Debbie, I am just guessing but perhaps the difference might be that the stores you are testing are “custom” whereas mine is not.

And this error message has appeared for several days now. The “advanced” search function has never worked in my eBay store after I switched to the new Stores design. I have had several people across the country test it and they all receive the same error message that I do.

My store works fine and isn’t custom.

Interesting. I have a mid-level store. Don’t know if that makes any difference or not. What level store do you have – basic, mid-level, or anchor?

My store is mid level and is at http://www.artworkontile.org

There is also a problem with GoogleBase Store Connector if you opt in for the new store format. Apparently caused by eBay using a different URL for the new store (until the March cut over). You need to stay with the old format (you can opt out on the ‘manage my store’ page) if you use GoogleBase Store Connector, otherwise it won’t work (until March).

Thanks so much Jim for the info!
